Antagonists
Nothing I write ever seems to have antagonists. At least, not in the traditional sense of "bad guy" antagonists with nefarious plots. I guess I just reject the notion of "evil" people... but I don't even usually have a person who is working against the protagonist. Thus, a lot of writing advice seems to not apply to what I write.

OH LOOK! A word count meter:

I have no idea if 90,000 words is the right length, but it's something to aim at.

My main characters are developing personalities and voices, secondary characters have been jumping into the narrative and finding niches for themselves, and the structure of the non-linear timeline is becoming clearer and flowing in a seemingly coherent manner.

Also, I seem to have successfully bound and duct-tape gagged my cranky inner editor, so I'm not fretting over what I need to revise yet.

This is all extremely exciting, I'm having an absolute blast, and right now, I am feeling very optimistic. It is odd to be so enthusiastic while I am actually engaged in the writing.

Go go you! Speaking as someone who's just gotten back into writing herself, isn't it fun when you can really enjoy doing it? Just writing, and getting it all out there, and realizing you can write more and more and more and not in an "oh my god, why won't this stop" kind of way, in an "oh my god, this is actually going somewhere" kind of why...as my father says, it is good to have written. It damn well is.

Antagonists are such a convenient way to make your protagonists miserable and lengthen the story. But the device is so clicheed and overused that most times I start yelling at the screen for the bad guy (obstacle) to Just.Go.Away.

I would much rather read about a character's self-discovery without conventional angst-ridden delays.

Anyway, yaaay-ing hugs for the writing,
H.
